Tobacco vs E-Liquid

There have been many articles and suggestions that electronic cigarettes are as harmful as real tobacco cigarettes.  They are suggesting that there are many harmful chemicals in e-cigarette vapour and they are even worse than real cigarettes.  Although more research will take place, most studies so far have been extremely positive about the health benefits in comparison to traditional smoking. We know for sure what ingredients are in e-liquids so let’s take a look at what’s hiding in the mist.

Tobacco cigarettes: 

There are more than 4000 chemicals in one cigarette other than tobacco. There are also additives to deepen  addiction such as caffeine, beeswax  and chocolate.  It is also proven that tobacco companies are increasing the nicotine amount in cigarettes. It grew by 11% between 1997 and 2005, and has only got greater since then.

Here are some of the most common chemicals:

Ammonia: Household cleaner

Angelica root extract: Known to cause cancer in animals

Arsenic: Used in rat poisons

Benzene: Used in making dyes, synthetic rubber

Butane: Gas; used in lighter fluid

Carbon monoxide: Poisonous gas

Cadmium: Used in batteries

Cyanide: Deadly poison

DDT: A banned insecticide

Ethyl Furoate: Causes liver damage in animals

Lead: Poisonous in high doses

Formaldehiyde: Used to preserve dead specimens

Methoprene: Insecticide

Megastigmatrienone: Chemical naturally found in grapefruit juice

Maltitol: Sweetener for diabetics

Napthalene: Ingredient in mothballs

Methyl isocyanate: Its accidental release killed 2000 people in Bhopal, India in 1984

Polonium: Cancer-causing radioactive element
