What is a Vape Tank?

While you might already be familiar with the concept of vaping, you might not understand the subtle components that allow the process to happen. The space that holds your e-liquid, which creates the vapour associated with vaping, is known as the vape tank.

The vape tank is part of the advanced personal vaporiser or APV. Sometimes known as a ‘mod’, there are a range of different types available for ultimate customisation and personalisation. Having a grasp of what a vape tank is will help you use and care for you kit, as well as help you discover what vape tank is best suited for you.

The Invention of the Vape Tank

The vape tank is, of course, the part of the APV that hosts the e-liquid before it is vaporised by the coil. The tank sits on the top of the battery, usually cylindrical in shape with a metallic top and bottom section, and a glass body.

Each tank contains a stem that runs up its centre, attached to the coil that connects the bottom of the tank to the mouthpiece. Vape tanks hold the e-liquid and allow it to soak into the wick which makes contact with the coil.

This means that when the vape is in use, the coil can heat up to vaporise the liquid absorbed by the wick. The vape tank continues to replenish the wick until the e-liquid needs to be replaced.

While there are a myriad of vape pen designs, they all function using the same method which makes operating and caring for your vape much easier.


How a Vape Tank is Constructed

With incredible opportunities for customisation, the majority of vapes still maintain a similar design of the tank itself. This includes materials like:

  • The tank section
  • Chimney and top section
  • Drip tip
  • The base which attaches to the battery
  • Coil

The tank section can be made from either glass or plastic and this is where the e – liquid is stored. The chimney is the component that attaches to the coil and provides an airway through the tank, with the drip tip acting as a mouthpiece that the user can inhale the vapour from.

The base section is attached to the coil which is screwed in to ensure a connection with the battery and the coil is the part that heats up to produce the vapour that the user can then inhale.

How to Fill a Vape Tank

There are a variety of methods you can utilise to fill up your vape tank but every expert will give you a warning: do not get e-liquid into the centre tube or chimney. You want to avoid this from occurring as it can cause performance issues due to the coils being filled with too much e-liquid, which can cause it to leak out.

When filling your tank, take great care when pouring the e-liquid in. We would recommend using an e-liquid bottle with a fine tip to have greater control over the dispensation. Tilt your tank and allow for the e-liquid to pour down the inside of the tank.

Some tanks have clear marks showing the maximum capacity, which instruct you how much e-lqiuid you should pour in. If this isn’t the case, make sure not to fill the tank to the max so the e-liquid doesn’t drain into the chimney when putting all the components back together.

It is recommended that, after filling the tank, you leave the e-liquid for around ten minutes to allow for it to be acclimated. This will prevent a burning taste in the tank and make your vaping experience much smoother.

We all make mistakes and sometimes overfilling the tank can occur accidentally. If this happens and you see a leak or your tank gurgles, simply remove the tank from the battery and place a paper towel over the airflow slots to dry them out. Then, take the mouthpiece and blow through it to remove any excess liquid from the chimney.

Tanks can be filled either from the top or the bottom depending on the make. If your tank has a filling hole at the bottom, turn the tank upside down to distribute the e-liquid evenly and avoid spillage.

Make sure not to take the top off as this can cause the e-liquid to leak right through the tank itself.

If you own a top-filling tank, gently remove the top section where the mouthpiece sits and separate it from the tank. This will reveal the fill hole where you can drip the e-liquid down the body of the tank.

How to Clean Your Vape Tank

Cleaning and maintenance of your vape tank should be regular and consistent to ensure smooth operation of your device and a better vaping experience. Regularly rinsing your tank will prevent build up of e-liquid residue gathering within it. Simply, remove all your components and rinse them under hot water, before drying them and putting the tank back together again.

How to clean your tank will highly depend on the type of vape that you own. Some vape tanks have built in fill holes which means you can’t remove the top cap. This will require you to clean the tank and the top cap as a whole rather than separately. Most modern vape tanks allow you to remove the mouthpiece, the coil, and even the bottom, so these can be washed separately.

Extra care must be taken when cleaning the wick as, if not dried correctly, it won’t perform optimally. Ensure it is thoroughly dried to remove as much moisture as possible. It is recommended that tanks are left to dry for a whole day to ensure all moisture has evaporated. 

Water residue vapourises at higher temperatures than an e-liquid and can cause problems within your device. If you want to thoroughly clean any coils that might be a bit grubby, use hot water or pure grain alcohol to soak the heads and break up any material that might have gathered with use. This can then be washed away.

While coils should be cleaned to maintain them, they also need to be replaced fairly regularly to ensure a pleasant vaping experience. With every clean, a coil loses its power, thus ensure that you monitor performance after each clean.

The Different Vape Tanks You Can Buy

Vaping can be customised for every customer and there a variety of vape tanks that can be utilised for different needs. Here are some of the vape tanks you can choose from:

Sub Ohm Vape Tanks

One of the most popular tanks on the market, sub ohm offer a lower resistance for users. While the resistance of the coils is much lower than other tanks, it is the wider width of the coil and chimney within them that causes a larger airflow.

A sub ohm tank is a tank that takes coils with a resistance of less than one ohm. One of the benefits of these tanks is that their coils heat up more quickly and more current is able to flow through them. This means that more e-liquid can be vaporised at once producing bigger clouds and stronger, more vibrant flavours.

Sub ohm tanks are popular because they are user friendly. They fill at the top of the tank and have built in filling areas to makes it much easier to replenish e-liquids. They usually have air control rings at the bottom section, a wide chimney and a wide drip tip which allows for greater airflow.

Mouth-to-Lung Vape Tanks

Mouth-to-lung vaping uses the same inhalation principles as smoking which makes mouth-to-lung vape tanks a great option for those who are wanting to quit smoking. These vape tanks contain a chimney in their centre which is attached to the coil and connected to the mouthpiece. 

Most mouth-to-lung vapes contain a bottom coil, meaning that the chimney and coil are attached to the bottom of the tank. When changing the coil or filling it up with e-liquid, you have to invert the tank. As designs are continuing to develop, we are seeing more mouth-to-lung tanks that are top-filling which makes them more user friendly.

One of the major differences between mouth-to-lung tanks and sub ohm vape tanks is that they are much higher resistance. Mouth-to-lung tanks can provide a more comfortable vaping experience for some due to the restricted airflow.

Their coils and chimneys are much thinner than found in sub ohms and, even with adjustments, the maximum airflow will be much less than in sub ohm tanks. The Nautilus GT Mini Tank is a perfect example of a mouth-to-lung tank that is designed with user experience in mind.


Rebuildable Tanks

Not as common as mouth-to-lung or sub ohm vape tanks, rebuildable tanks are still used among vapers who want ultimate customisation. These are usually sub ohm tanks that have a rebuildable optimiser or RBA. The difference between these and a sub ohm is the coil.

RBA’s have custom coils rather than pre-made ones. Usually, an atomiser head with two contact points is used to connect the coil to the bottom. You can then add your own so the e-liquid can feed up the tank to your coil. These are popular with experienced vapers who want more control over their tank’s performance.
